Emily Henry • Beach Read

If a book is going to have me kicking my feet and giggling it’s this one. Emily Henry has done it againnnnn!

* Rivals to lovers
* Romance
* Slow Burn

January Andrews is a hopeless romantic who also happens to be an author who writes happily ever afters. Augustus Everrett is the polar opposite. Also an author, but he kills off his casts. Once they accidentally reconnect one summer Gus and January place a bet. She can write a better sad book than he can write a romance.

I loved this book so much. Emily Henry is a wonderful author who writes books that are so easy to read. These characters had such great chemistry together.

This book was a sloooooowwww burrrrnnnn in the best way. It didn’t feel rushed at all. But it also wasn’t so slow that it became boring. This is the perfect execution of a slow burn romance.
I’m excited to read the next books in Emily Henry’s collection.

I rated Beach Read 5 stars and read it in 1 day. I absolutely ate it up.

I know I’m in the minority here, but I’ll be honest: I couldn’t wait for this to end.

To be fair, I really enjoyed the first 50% of this. But it really lost me in the second half.

The book starts out with a main character who is immature and quite irritating, and it ends without her going through any significant personal growth.

Where it lost me was around the halfway point, she does something super toxic and manipulative. The finds out a secret about her love interest from his Aunt… something personal he didn’t feel safe sharing with her yet, and something that isn’t any of her business. She somehow felt so entitled to this piece of knowledge that she randomly, completely unprompted, throws it in his face in a really meal/cruel way and it’s honestly pretty messed up.

I thought there would be significant repercussions for her for doing that, but it got pretty brushed off in my opinion.

Then the rest of the book is her being like “ugh I’m overly involved with my parents marriage” and “ugh I’m very insecure and anytime a man isn’t fawning over me I feel worthless.”

Blech.

I did enjoy some of the spicy scenes and their initial banter when she first arrives in Michigan. But overall, not my fave.

Beach Read was just okay for me. Not my cup of tea but I can see why others would love this one.

I honestly just read this for something uplifting after A Little Life and I knew I could squeeze it before the end of the month so this book certainly fulfilled those needs.

I’ll still happily give Henry’s other books a chance though since I did enjoy People We Meet.
