It was ok. Some fun and I imagine it was more interesting when it was written. Definitely shows it's age with some of the writing like the in depth tangents of corals and fauna.

This book was recommended to me by a student and unfortunately, it wasn’t for me.
I found the language to be a bit too much for me right now, plus the focus on the botany was just confusing.
I can see why this is a classic though, but I would probably engage with this better as a movie.
I was so hyped for twenty thousand leagues under the sea as I had long been befuddled by a childhood recollection of the 1954 adaption that I vividly remember depicting an epic battle with an octopus. Thus I went into the book thinking the hunt for the mysterious narwal sinking ships was the plot. I was sadly mistaken--- and lied to. The Octopus only showed up for two pages and was pretty meh. Thanks for the crushing expectations, 1954.

The story unfolded in an episodic way, modeling itself after it's inspiration, The Odyssey. However, these episodes felt slow and disjointed and I didn't feel like there was really a climax. I wish the three companions with their differing desires to stay onboard had really had to come to grips what decision they would make without the push of the Nemo's attack.
Overall, it was slow and in my opinion, doesn't stand the test of time. I liked the 1954 movie adaption better which is never a good sign.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. It’s quite a bit more sci fi for my liking, as in focused on the adventure and the sea rather than the story as much. It’s an exploration type novel. It took me a bit longer to finish than a usual read. Sometimes a bit hard to stay focused on the page, but I’d recommend it to any who have a curiosity for classics
