Six child "irregularites" have found their way to the Playroom, a government facility where they live peaceful if repetitive lives safely away from prying cryptid-seeker eyes and the discrimination of the larger world. Until one day, they learn one of their caretakers is a double agent determined to deliver them to his mysterious employer the Collector. In trying to escape, they find themselves alone in the desert, unsure of where to go and very little means to get there. They will have to work together and share their talents if they hope to find safety in this world, as well as find who they can trust. Their journey will take them from places welcoming irregularities, to places where irregularities are at odds, and to places where irregularities like them serve as sideshow attractions.
I bought this book nearly a year ago because the cover intrigued me, the blurb sold me, and the icing on the cake was the few very positive reviews I read of it coming across my social media feeds. Now I just wish I hadn't waited so long to read it - it was worth every second and then some. The story is engaging, the characters are all endearing and well characterized, and the quality of the artwork - sequence, coloring, action, everything - is top-notch.
While there are six kids to follow, each one gets their own moment to shine not only in action but also in relating their backstory. Not an easy feat in a single graphic novel, either to balance let alone succeed in.

🇬🇧 A lovely book. A group of very different characters come together for a super interesting journey. I really enjoyed getting a glimpse into each character’s past — although Clarice was the least developed, which is a shame — and how each of them had their own moment to shine. I also appreciated the various subplots touching on themes like gender, coming out, self-love, romantic love, and of course, friendship, among others.

Maggie is hilarious and definitely the star of the graphic novel.

However, I felt that one narrative thread was a bit insensitive, even if unintentional, and might be harmful or triggering for some readers.

Overall, it's a fun and unique adventure, and I’m excited to see if these characters return in another book. I truly believe they have a lot of potential, especially considering all the friends they made along the way and how the story ended.

Love, love, love these kiddos! Such a great story about found family!!

I love when I pick up a comic at SPX on a whim and it blows me away. This one manages to pack in a lot of story without feeling rushed and also gives the characters room to breathe and reveal their own personalities. The art is beautiful and fun and cute, lush and detailed. I'm glad the story was contained in this one volume, but I was also sad to reach the end of it.
