Powerful message about compassion and sharing wrapped up in a story that isn't too preachy. In my Thanksgiving set for 4th grade.

It is always best to think of others that have it worse than you do. Being kind and giving to others is what I took away from this book. And also something that you really want but can't have will eventually come to you in a mysterious way.

I read this book in preparation for a money themed storytime/program and it was very cute. I could see this working for several age groups to explain the value of money and having money--or not having it--to spend. It also illustrates the difference between wants and needs well. This was my favorite book to read in preparation for this program.

For: parents/caregivers looking for a book to start the money conversation with young readers.

Possible red flags: depictions of poverty and lower income living situations.

loved this. Desire, wanting something so bad... tight shoes.. compassion.

Lately I have been thinking about some of the foolish (youthful maybe) choices I made in college. They seem a lot like buying a pair of shoes that don't fit, with money that is precious.

I was just in awe after reading. Such a powerful message and to display it through a young boy who is so relatable to others in the world. This is about a boy who wants the latest trend of shoes but his grandmother cannot afford the retail price. They find a pair in a throat store that's a size too small, yet the boy buys them anyways and never wears them from the pain. He does a selfless action in the end and it is so inspiring. Definitely a great read for young children k-3.

This touching story about poverty and struggling with it is a common thing i saw and experienced growing up. In this book, I made many childhood connections reading this book, which I can recalled giving someone something of mine to a child that was worst off than I was; giving that little something created a friendship that has lasted a lifetime. Acknowledging that there are others struggling more than you, says that their is hope still for humanity by showing kindness to thy neighbor when in need or not.
