This was so good?! I've had this book on my shelves for YEARS, if I had known it was this good I would've read this much earlier.

Already on the 5th page, I could tell I liked the writing style and that this book was going to be good, but wow. It starts as a genre: history book, set in Northern Africa/the Middle East, but then it evolves entirely and at the end it's somehow fantasy & superheroes-ish? I love it!

I'm also a big fan of the female representation here, a lot of badass girls and women, they're great.

There was this plot point that had my eyes rolling because *obviously* I knew how that was going to end, and then it totally subverted my expectations and it was something completely different!
Spoiler I'm talking about Jin not being the Rebel Prince, but Jin being Ahmed's brother instead

And generally, that's what I felt like reading this. Page after page, this book kept surprising me, and I just really loved it.

This book is all gunpowder and desert, a combination I didn’t realise how much I needed. The interactions between Jin and Amani are hotter than the desert. I don’t think there’ll be a day where I don’t swoon over this story.

You know that book that you read that is totally different from everything you read so far? Yeah. Rebel of the Sands it’s all that. It’s truly one of those stories that I regret never being translated to Portugal because I think readers would love it.

It’s clearly a fantasy but it doesn’t have what we are “used to it”. It doesn’t have dragons. It doesn’t have mates. It doesn’t have faes.
But it has folklore (inserts Taylor Swift) from the middle east, from the desert, and me (an uncultured swine (inserts Severus Snape) devoured it because in a world of common creatures, Buraki stood up for being different.

I don't need to say it but I say it anyway. I LOVED THE WORLDBUILDING. Love it. Love it. Love it. Everything from politics, the role of women and their strength (that are worth less than a piece of bread), the revolution, the magic, it took away my power to put the book down.

Amani is something different. A girl from the desert that doesn’t know when to be quiet and that tries her luck in a world that doesn’t even see her as a human being.

And yes, there is romance, and yes, he has black hair and it’s sarcastic and mysterious and yes, his name is Jin and yes I loved him.

The writing and the dialogues are good and in that regard I truly don’t have anything bad to say. I think that the author did an amazing job at putting me in the middle of the desert with temperatures that I could feel (Portugal in the summer time. I was boilling).

The only reason it's not a 5 star reading it’s because… I’m a romance type of girl and romance exists and it’s there but I really wanted to see more of Jin and Amani. It's the very first book you know?

I really recommend it. So much!
