This book came out 20 years ago, when I was a freshman in high school. I wish I had read it then. Its like the author peered into the lives of children of immigrants and the lives of the immigrants themselves and created this book. There have been realizations I've had about myself and my parents over the years that are so beautifully described in here.

A nice work of fiction. For me though, there was nothing particularly compelling about the story

Beautiful prose, from beginning to end. I wavered between 4 and 5 stars, but in the end, I decided her ability to take the mundane and make it beautiful was well worth the accolades this book received. Ultimately a simple story of family; the blood and traditions and bonds that connect you forever, regardless of geography, culture, skin color or even death itself.
