This isn’t the best story in the world but I can’t stop listening to it.

I love the world and the storyline, but the writing has moments of immaturity I find slightly off-putting.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Joy is still reeling from her rise as an Elite Hunter. Ace, who almost killed her, is on lock down and being held in custody. There is no time to waste though, the magical and deadly creatures are still continually threatening Apex City and it is the job of the Elite to make sure that the residents are none the wiser that the problems right at their front door.

Because of Joy's unique 11-hound pack, she is used in ways that other Elite and Hunters are not. This includes special job assignments like the one given to her by her Uncle; patrol the storm sewers and abandoned tunnels eliminating any creatures that might be lurking. What she did not expect would be new and never-before-seen creatures in addition to dead Psimons. When one dead Psimon turns into multiple, all being found by Joy and her pack alone, the blame and suspicion is thrown her way.

will Joy be able to solve the mystery of the Psimons while keeping herself safe? Is the introduction of new creatures something much larger...possibly war?

Lackey picks up right where Hunter left off. Readers are hit with action right from the start. Elite is a fast ride with seemingly endless battles being fought, and issues larger than just Joy and her Elite team clearing out the creatures that are on the loose. Readers will see how Joy grows into her own as part of the Elite team, how the new responsibility she is facing affects everything in her life. Definitely a middle book setting the stage for an all out impending war. Readers that enjoy high fantasy, adventure, and kick-ass female protagonists will enjoy this book. Not quite sure what took me SO long to pick this up in the first place, I enjoyed the first book in the series, and once I started reading this one I was right back in Apex City fighting with Joy.

Another great read! I kinda remembered what happened, but not all of it. Such a great read, and must finish the series!

I thoroughly enjoyed this second installment in the Hunter series. The active plot was enough to keep me distracted from real life and engaged in the story - which as things get busier and faster here is harder and harder to do. I liked the progression of the story arcs with the hounds and the growth that Joy goes through. I really appreciate that the romance is not taking centre stage. This story is about Joy and her place within the turbulent politics and drama in Apex city, and there is no unnecessary romantic angst which I really appreciate. Overall, I'm super glad I picked up this book - Lackey doesn't disappoint. Looking forward to reading the third in the series when it comes out later this year!
