3.5⭐️ but rounding down because the ending was a bit of a let down. Also, the mental health discussions left a bad taste in my mouth, though I did know from the synopsis that I’d likely find that aspect frustrating, so I can’t say I wasn’t warned. Despite that, this atmospheric novella did have me glued to the pages. The whole time I wondering how it was going to play out and which character(s) were lying vs which were telling the truth.

If this book was Taylor Swift lyrics:

“I guess you really did it this time
Left yourself in your warpath
Lost your balance on a tightrope
Lost your mind tryin' to get it back”

Really blatant fatphobia immediately upon starting the book that continued. Added nothing to the story.

After losing his wife, Joe decides to spend Christmas Eve in the mountains of New England getting back to basics like his ancestors hunting for his food. It's peaceful and calming; leaving everyday life for a couple hours. His peace is soon shattered by a frantic woman running barefoot through the snow. Nicole claims she's been kidnapped and the man who did it is chasing after her. Joe then meets Dan who informs him Nicole has a mental illness and he's her husband trying to get her home - who should Joe believe?

This is almost like the classic she said / he said thriller but there were twists I did not see coming. As always characters are fleshed out and you get invested in them and their story. Joe is just a guy trying to become one with nature after losing his wife and moving to a new city - he is a generally good guy. He believes Nicole and wants to help her but Dan's story is also really convincing.
Joe makes an excellent point during the book and it's this:
Does he only believe Nicole because he met her first and heard her side of the story first? Had he met Dan first, would he have believed him more than Nicole?

The short chapters keep your attention and if you have a quiet day then this could easily be read in one sitting. Although only 128 pages it certainly packs a punch and doesn't feel rushed.

This is my fourth book by Triana and I'm excited to read more - I've yet to read one where I'm not invested or captivated. This book is a thriller rather than a horror (like other books I have read and loved) but there are some graphic scenes some people may find unsettling so I'd recommend you check TW before you dive in if you like to know what you're getting into.

Joe goes hunting up a mountain using survivalist methods and a bow and arrow. He meets a woman without shoes or a coat in this winter weather who tells him she was kidnapped and tortured and has escaped. So he tries to help her. When they hear a man coming she takes off and the man tells Joe he is searching for his wife who is mentally ill and delusional and he asks if Joe will help find his wife. Which of them is telling the truth and is Joe in danger himself?

This is a far cry from splatterpunk which I've previously read by Triana. This is a suspenseful chase with lots of twists. It was well-written and a fine story. I thought all characters were believable. The ending was disappointing though as it just told us what we already knew by that point. However, a gripping read.
