Maybe my expectations were too high for this book but sadly it didn’t do it for me.
I could see so much good in it, but it couldn’t draw me in. I barely ever take this long to finish a book these days and I had to force myself through the last quarter.

I couldn’t care less about the mystery. It just didn’t intrigue me. So as soon as character moments ended, I wasn’t interested anymore.
The character dynamics were fun and Edwin and Robin’s relationship were the best part of this book. Nothing really new or exciting about them, but definitely still enjoyable to read.

In the beginning I was also very intrigued by the magic system. I love a magic system that feels very scientific. But slowly I got bored of it. Edwin kept rambling about it but he couldn’t tell me anything new that could peak my interest again.

I don’t know. I’m just a bit sad that the book I had been excited about for so long ended up being an exhaustive read.

Gay murder mystery in Edwardian London! What else is there to say? A jock with layers. A guarded nerd. This was lovely and highly recommend.

Add-on after a re-read:
Still love this book! The audiobook not so much.

This book had exactly what I like. The magic system was interesting and I want to learn more about it. Robin and Edwin were a delight; loved their banter, their tension, their honesty. <3
A bit steamier than I thought it would be, but that's fine by me!

I expected the mystery to be a bit more central instead of the romance, however it still was an enjoyable read. I did not expect the explicit sex scenes though.

The book is sexist, albeit casually but the women of this book are not treated well, by side characters or by main characters. This book is third person but clearly from a dual perspective of Edwin and Robin. So when it says "as if to not tax her small woman brain," that's coming from a character's thoughts.
It's not good and some parts felt like they were also racist. The first Indian woman that Robin speaks to is "surprisingly well-spoken". As opposed to what? Speaking with a heavy accent? It doesn't feel right.
No woman in this book is treated with respect, at most they get causal indifference. Robin doesn't encourage his sister and suffragist friends, he acts like it's some fad his sister's in.
Even when the women help save their lives it feels very lame as if they were an afterthought.

I’d been reading some heavy books lately and was in the mood for some escapism, so I turned to this recent pick by my Page One Books literary matchmakers. And y’all, they are so good at this.

A Marvellous Light was exactly what I needed. I was immersed in world of early 1900s London where magic exists beneath most people’s awareness. The stakes are immediately high, and the mystery is solid. But the real draw of this novel (it’s going to be a trilogy!) is the developing relationship between the two men forced to work together.

Neither man is perfect and they’re both delightfully complex in very different ways. Within this magical world, Marske captures the even more magical feeling of being truly seen by another person.

Magic, mystery, and a compelling queer romance. What more could I ask for?
