I have never been more happy to DNF a book.

This was required reading for my English class, but luckily I got away with stopping at 78%. This book was the bane of my existence.

Not only was the writing style so unnecessarily flowery and stiff, it basically said NOTHING. Just a bunch of talking in circles (pretty, english-teacher-bait-y circles, mind you).

Worse yet were the graphic scenes of animal abuse and death without warning. I swear she spent PAGES describing absolutely horrifying scenes of animals dying slowly and painfully, for no reason other than she “found them interesting.”

I was annotating the book as I went, and at one point I added a highlight color for “serial killer warning signs” mostly as a joke. I used that color a lot.

At best, the book gave off the impression of someone who was pandering to a specific audience. The fact that my English teacher is in love with it only proves it worked. Honestly, it’s almost impressive how she manages to say absolutely nothing of importance in so many words. And even more impressive that people actually fall for it.
