A family of three decides to move back to the house where Nate (the father) grew up. It was in no way a happy childhood and the house is filled with the haunting of bad memories. The mother starts losing touch with reality and the kid Olly brings home a new friend who in some ways are strange. There’s also a haunted mine - everything’s set up for some sort of disaster, of course.
So close to a 4, but something about the wrap-up did not completely do it for me. This is a story that engages and at times really sucked me in. Fast paced but not annoyingly so. The story gets insane at times but still manages to pull it together pretty nice and tidy. There’s a lot of humour, which I just learned to expect from certain horror genres. I don’t always smile but it works well enough. The characters are often relatable and fits into the story. The format with rather short chapters is also very reader-friendly. The atmosphere is eerie in a spooky-cosy way (don’t pretend you don’t know what I mean) and it is also rather scary at times. Great read for this time of year.

I only made it about 35% through this one before I stopped. I've heard from others it gets better, and maybe I'll jump back into it down the road, but I just couldn't get into it with all the dark magic and borderline sci-fi stuff happening. It's just not a genre I like. Still, I want to know how it ends since I'm a tad invested in these characters.

DNF @ pg 338
This book started so promising but it turned into another story entirely. Loved the writing but sadly it was not the story for me. Trying to be kinder to myself this year this by DNF'ing/putting aside books that don't bring me joy.
