I had high hopes when starting this book and was pumped to read it. The first third of the book had me glued to it and I was feeling the whole "Stephen King" vibe. But somewhere along the way, I got bogged down with detail and it seemed to stretch on forever with not much happening. For me, it never regained the momentum and I lost interest. My thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing a galley of this book for review.

I feel like this was a first draft. And about 200 pages too long. There was a LOT of unnecessary filler in there. And I'm sorry but the ending made me roll my eyes. It was well written, I liked the characters in the way you like the guy who sells you your coffee every day. Surface like.
I do appreciate how the giant mess was all tied together at the end but it took far too long to get there. I can see why others really liked this book. Just not my thing I guess.

A big hope-filled charmer of a book, packed full of gross stuff like exploding eyeballs, nose maggots, barf, blood, face worms, and haunted amusement parks. Heart-healing!

Freaking fantastic book. So I almost gave up on this book, almost didn’t finish it, but I am so glad I saw it through to the end. I felt like it had a slow start, I hate slow starts, I like a book to grab me from the very beginning. This one did not grab me at the beginning, in fact it didn’t grab me until I was about 200 pages in. It was WORTH the wait though. It ended up being fantastic, beautiful and honest and I loved it! Highly recommended, just be patient with the beginning set up, I promise the pay off is worth it.

This book was trope soup and needed a ruthless editor. It felt like new characters/lore/tropes were being introduced right up to the end, and the entire story felt all over the place. Clunky dialogue and a lot of poor phrasing. The entire serial killer plot could have been dropped; it felt like an unnecessary middleman between Jake and the demon and only barely served to give Maddie a purpose/backstory. Not a strong enough story for this book to be so long, and not a strong enough author to play with time travel or multiverse.
