In the author’s note at the end, Ness says the spirits of “Forever” by Judy Blume and “Mrs. Dalloway” by Virginia Woolf suffuse this story, and I think that’s an apt descriptor. It’s certainly also other things - and very Patrick Ness.
I didn’t really enjoy The Rest Of Us Just Live Here, though I appreciated the meta of it...so I got nervous at the supernatural element of this book. And honestly, that part of it didn’t work well for me here either. I found it largely a distraction from the story I wanted to read - Adam’s story. The secondary storyline created some interesting grace notes, which I appreciated, but ultimately I didn’t think that part was worth the disruption.
That’s because the main story, in and of itself, was so tenderly written and lovely. It didn’t need anything else, it was beautiful and powerful on its own. I loved it, and because of it I would recommend this book despite the side plot I didn’t really like. The main storyline is totally worth it.

I enjoyed the primary story about Adam, but didn't care at all for the supernatural side story about the queen/meth addict/murder victim. I'm not quite sure what it was meant to convey or how it fit into the larger story, and this book is far weaker for its inclusion.
Ummmmmmm what? I usually love Patrick Ness, but what was happening? Two disconnected stories or did I miss the point? I liked the Adam narrative but I never fully understand the other narrative...

the prose of this book is lovely and i quite enjoyed adam’s storyline, but the interweaving of the second storyline didn’t quite work for me. it didn’t feel convincing, the prose style was so different as to be v jarring, and it was confusing, v difficult to piece together. all in all, i liked this book a lot, even if i don’t think it totally succeeded with all of its projects
I really liked the Adam parts of the story but the Queen's part didn't interest me and I'm still not sure how the two pieces connected.
Not my favourite of Ness' books, but nothing that would put me off reading another of his.

I’m unsure on how to rate this book, but it feels really special
Not my favorite Patrick Ness. Too much angst. A day in the life of Adam Thorn with some parallels to the Fairy Queen and a recent murder victim.
Summary: Adam Thorn doesn't know it yet, but today will change his life. Between his religious family, a deeply unpleasant ultimatum from his boss, and his own unrequited love for his sort-of ex, Enzo, it seems as though Adam's life is falling apart. At least he has two people to keep him sane: his new boyfriend (he does love Linus, doesn't he?) and his best friend, Angela. But all day long, old memories and new heartaches come crashing together, throwing Adam's life into chaos. The bindings of his world are coming untied one by one; yet in spite of everything he has to let go, he may also find freedom in the release.
