The Empire Strikes Back of Trek books!
Middle act of a trilogy executed to perfection. Beautiful crossover stuff throughout, really fleshes out the whole Trek universe. And that ending....no spoilers, but wow.

As the previous book, this was ok. Nothing great. The biggest disappointment is it's utter predictability. It's been obvious from Book 1 that there is going to be a "big reveal" in this series, and this book just makes it that much more transparent.

That was intense! Normally I find the middle book in a trilogy to be a bit of a let down since nothing begins and nothing ends. That was not the case with Mere Mortals. It continues the story from book one, but many new twists make this just as interesting. I love how seamlessly they are combining elements of TNG, Titan, Voyager, DS9 and even Enterprise. (There was even a little shout out to Peter David's New Frontier series.) As expected this ended with quite a cliffhanger. I'm glad I've already ordered book three!

While Trek on the screen is concentrating on the Abramsverse it's nice to visit the Trek I love. This was a great story, but don't start with this one as it's the middle book in a trilogy, start with Gods of Night.

I think it was a step up from the first novel in the series so maybe a 3.5 and the ending is certainly bang on for a trilogy "the dark before the light" type of feeling. However, I just feel like after reading 60 Trek books there is certainly better out there and while this is good it certainly isn't 4 or 5 star Trek material in my honest opinion.

Slower, and you can see the resolution coming, but it's also very TOS-style old-school sci-fi in ways that really tickled me.

Another action-packed installment in the Destiny trilogy. The story was certainly exciting and kept me turning pages. But I would've preferred the book to focus on more of the characters we'd already spent time with, rather than spending a huge chunk of time on the diplomatic machinations of the Federation president and various diplomats. It was cool getting a bit with Garak and Seven of Nine but characters both felt underused in that subplot.
The part I most appreciated was the continuing explanation of what happened to Erika Hernandez and her crewmates after her disappearance. I feel like Hernandez and the women stranded with her got the kind of attention to their motivations and emotions that we really needed as well for characters like Seven.

Like the first volume, this is a page-turner but ultimately unsatisfying as a standalone novel. I'm moving swiftly on to volume three!
