I couldn't put this down after the halfway point. The plot twists/reveals are expertly executed, the characters intriguing and well rounded (loved Jovis particularly), the magic system and the setting is really cool and we're left with tons of exciting questions and potential for the next book.
I've dropped half a star because there were a couple of aspects that didn't quite reach its potential, for example I feel the setting could have been more immersive descriptively, and.

Super fun fantasy world with interesting magic, following multiple character POVs that all felt distinct and interesting. My only gripe is that the different characters felt like they existed in totally separate worlds, so it jarred me when they met. The villages/islands felt pretty empty aside from the characters we know by name, and the overarching empire didn't feel present outside of the capital. I'm hoping that future books expand on the world and the politics (and magic).

It felt like the description on the back cover of this book only covers around an eighth of the characters we follow through the narrative. Very much more about political upheaval with a magic system somewhat similar to Babel, I'm definitely curious where this will lead.

a really good fantasy with amazing worldbuilding and switching POVs that i actually don’t hate! can’t wait to read books 2 & 3!
Am I the only one who didn’t like this one? To be fair, I listened on Audiobook and really hated one of the narrators so that might have hurt the overall score.
I got more than halfway through when I realized I didn’t give a shit about the characters and I had always hated the POV changes. They didn’t feel as important as the author was making them out to be bc I didn’t find her book that important. Happy to dnf
