OMG OMG OMG!!! This has quickly become one of my favorite fantasies! This book was so fast paced and the political intrigue was so well done. I usually don't love politics but this book ha dme hooked on all the politics! I can't begin to tell you how amazing this book was! I have already purchased book #2! lol how i am supposed to wait until 2023 for book 3! SOOO GOOD!!!

I’d mark this as somewhere between a 4 and 4.5. The beginning is a bit slow and disjointed but once you make your way through the initial somewhat confusing setup, the story catches hold and starts flying in a way that’s enthralling, intense and unique. It’s such a creative concept and the author wove all of the differing people in such a coordinated but complex way. Serious, SO creative and thought out. I can’t wait to start the next book in the series.

the world building and setting were phenomenal. so immersive. but the plot drags so much and it put me into a bit of a reading slump. may or may not continue unsure.

had a lot of fun with this despite writing issues. interesting plotlines and set-up. multiple povs a bit choppy, character motivations a bit repetitive, pacing sort of draggy in the middle and rushed at the end

Phenomenal book. The middle drags in places and some of the plot twists are easily seen ahead of time, but that does nothing to diminish this story. Can't wait for the second!

The flip-flop of chapters and people point of views doesn't suite this story as well as it did GOTs... It's kind of anxiety inducing. Still. Intriguing. Will probs finish series to see how many people end up dead.

Fantastic world building and fascinating magic system that reminds me of "coding" in locklands. I loved the otter-cat animal companion in this book too. Sometimes the pacing or the actions of the character felt a bit off but I'm excited to see the next book -it feels quite well planned and outlined which is something I love to see.

Note - this is a gender egalitarian fantasy, which is admittedly a very low bar but it's nice to see after I dropped several other books for failing this bar
