What I considered phenomenal 15 years ago is only slightly better than average today. And yikes to that cringe sex scene (phallus? really?). But, thoroughly enjoying my reread of an old favorite series and it's fun because I don't remember all the particulars so it's almost like reading for the first time.

Such a great story that talked about real scary, upsetting situations. She wrote them fantastically. And I do love the relationship with Harper and Tolliver, I'm glad they are getting to be together.

Harris is a versatile writer - from fun Sookie Stackhouse to nail-biting Harper Connelly. I admit the Tolliver/Harper miscommunication was irritating, but the plot was captivating.

In this third novel in the Harper Connelly series, Harper and Tolliver get an assignment in North Carolina trying to find the bodies of a half dozen young men considered to be "runaway" age. After searching the final disappearance site, Harper gets a reading and discovers a mass grave sight behind an old dilapidated house. The cause of death for the victims was so traumatizing that at first, Harper finds it difficult relaying the cause of death of the boys. Then on their first attempt out of town, Harper gets hit over the head and sentenced to a few days recuperation in the local hospital. Even though looking for more bodies is the last think Harper wants to do, the local authorities and State Bureau of Investigation agents demand that she stay in town to help with their investigation. Harper's friends Manfred and Xylda Bernardo reprise their roles and add unwanted media attention on the town and the murder investigations. Also, Harper and Tollivers relationship escalate to a new level. My complaint from the first two novels holds true here: the mystery wasn't very difficult to solve, but the increasing terror of the crime I felt actually made the book more interesting.

I really enjoyed this book, especially seeing Harper and Tolliver's relationship move to a whole new place. Good solid mystery, too. The most disappointing thing is that I don't see a book 4 coming out anytime soon. Wah!

Review - This one is my favourite of the series so far, as it seems like the relationship between Harper and Tolliver is clear at last, which is what took up much of the last book in the series, [b:Grave Surprise|140078|Grave Surprise (Harper Connelly, #2)|Charlaine Harris|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1426911066s/140078.jpg|3159799], and explains why I didn't enjoy it as much as the first in the series, [b:Grave Sight|58077|Grave Sight (Harper Connelly, #1)|Charlaine Harris|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1328694483s/58077.jpg|2027280]. The mystery in this one was so well-done I thought, that I wanted to keep reading because I needed to find out more. I also really enjoyed some of the jokey interplay between different characters and it was nice, in comparison to the previous books, that people are beginning to accept Harper and her ability rather than scorn it.
