I really did genuinely enjoy the book but it really did feel like they just left you with nothing like it just ends, no epilogue nothing it just ends like you don’t find out what happened to Liyana or to Omer or the kids at the camp cause it just ended. Over all though it was an enjoyable quick read

This was banned at my school, so I thought I would give it a try. It was lovely, poetic, and well-written, but not the most thrilling for me.

An American girl from St Louis is suddenly whisked away to Palestine, when her father decides that it is time for them to meet their extended family. This is NOT a "Not Without My Daughter" scenario. The tension between Jews and Palestinians is addressed regularly, and there are some moments of bloodshed. But everyone in Liyana's family is wonderful and even her all-American mom adapts to their new country well. The book is mostly about her getting used to a new culture, while also learning how to be true to herself and her modern American ideas about gender, religion, etc.

beautifully written - a slow moving story punctuated with hiaku-like prose. an secular Arab family moves back to Palestine to reconnect with their family and finds their desire for peace between Jews and Arabs is shared by their matriarch: the grandmother.

I would've loved this book in 5th or 6th grade. I read a lot of books about Israel/Palestine, but very few from a non-Israeli perspective, and it's nice to find one that's nuanced and identifiable.

One of my childhood favorites. Simply lovely.
