If you search the internet for Tan Yunxian, you will find limited information. However, you will come across her book, Miscellaneous Records of a Female Doctor. Lisa See drew upon this book to bring some of Tan's cases to life. While See referenced the cases mentioned in Tan’s work, she also researched the historical period in which Tan lived to construct her story. It was the tension between the era Tan lived in and the narrative See was trying to convey that I found challenging while reading the novel.
Aside from this conflict, it was intriguing to have a murder introduced into the story. I can't say that Doctor Wong's and Miss Chen's accounts are entirely truthful. Even if they aren't, the storyline is believable. However, I can say that See conducted thorough research for this one.
Even so, I don't blame See for giving Tan a happy ending in her book. Although Tan had four children, only her two daughters survived. In historical fiction, it is often the case that characters from the past achieve their happy endings.

Un roman qui décrit avec justesse les relations entre les femmes, qu’elle soit complexe, harmonieuse ou désastreuse. Cette ouvrage retrace la vie d’une femme qui a été une grande femme médecin au XV ème siècle en Chine ayant même servie à la cour impériale. On la suit de sa prime jeunesse ( jours de lait) jusqu’à ses jours de sel. Lady Tan est une femme fascinante tant par son histoire que par ses aptitudes médicale qui en sont temps avait fait d’elle une femme grandement reconnue et respectée, malgré tout elle doit faire face à des intrigues et à la vie d’une femme de son époque. La plume de l’autrice maîtrise à la fois l’immersion temporelle et culturelle mais aussi un fluidité de lecture qui fait qu’on est très vite retenue en otage par son récit. La relation entre les femmes entre elle est particulièrement intéressante que ce soit ( belle fille, belle mère , mère et fille , épouse concubine ou encore les relations amicales) chacune d’elle possède ses subtilités même si quelques chose semblent les unir, être une femme dans un monde d’homme. Je ne peux que vous recommander de lire ce roman qui est un bijou de littérature historique.

This novel is based on a real woman doctor Tan Yunxian, in Ming Dynasty China. So much detailed research, which was very informative. I did find the first half of the book was very slow, and it took me a long time to get interested in the story.
