One of my favorite books I’ve read in a long time! It took me a bit to get into to it but once I was in I couldn’t put it down!

This book was informative and troubling at the same time. It still blows my mind how society functioned this way for hundreds of years.

I really rate this 3 1/2 stars. The book is a little slow in places and goes into detail about Chinese medicine. The last third of the book really flies and I couldn't stop reading. I love the strong female characters and how they survived in very tough situations.

I received an ARC of this book through NetGalley- thank you.

I loved this book. The storytelling was fascinating, and all the descriptions really pulled me in. I have really enjoyed everything I've read by Lisa See because she teaches me about subjects I know nothing about in such an interesting way.

This was a fantastic addition to the streak of books by and about women I’ve been reading. I don’t know much Chinese history, so I loved learning more about the time period through Lady Tan’s eyes, especially with the context the author gives around the real Lady Tan’s life. It’s a very sad book in a lot of ways - the deaths of many of Yunxian’s family members throughout her lifetime, the conflict she feels over binding her daughters’ feet (especially after
Respectful Lady dies from an infection in her feet
), and the treatment of women at the time. But Lady Tan and her circle of women are strong, intelligent, and resourceful and this was a lovely homage to her memory.

Not my favorite genre and the ending didn't feel in keeping with the rest of the tone and pace.
