I usually love this author’s writing. However, being more than 50% of the way through a book and still not being interested in the story isn’t it for me.

After hearing the phrase “kissed their teeth” for the 5th time before the 35% mark, I was poised on the brink of DNF’ing.

Then we got a chapter of a random podcast? Which was weird but I trudged on, like a good soldier.

Then we met our…love interest. And the most insta love of insta love happened because “we are both traumatized” and “omg I was holding his hand and didn’t even realize” shut up, you were a lot more interesting BEFORE you met this man.

I enjoy Okorafor’s character and world building in short order, and this one did not disappoint. The story of two outcasts with chemistry facing an evil corporate overlord didn’t capture me as much as AO’s narration of life in a body disabled in a futuristic Nigeria, the disability’s origin of which is a story much older and a necessary commentary on the reproductive politics of environmental degradation and industrial food production. As her disability became a site of experimentation, she became stronger, hyper strong and super human yet not recognized my family or nation as that middle ground of simply human.
