"Being bruised doesn’t make you bad, unless you’re a peach, and even a bruised peach is good for making jam."

I've been following the Wayward Children books for years now, but somehow I fell behind with the most recent installments. I recently read book seven, and I decided to make Lost In The Moment And Found a priority after rediscovering my love for this series. And I'm glad I did! This is without doubt one of my favorite novellas of the bunch even though there are parts that are hard to read. Lost In The Moment And Found is quite dark as it focuses on child abuse, grooming, gaslighting and death of a parent among other things. I could really appreciate the author's note, which made it easier to read some of the more triggering scenes... This novella is not all sad though, as it has the same whimsical dose of magical realism with the strange thrift shop and the main character traveling to unknown worlds. Still, even at the shop there is a lesson to be learned, and again Lost In The Moment And Found is a lot darker than expected throughout. I could appreciate how everything was wrapped up in the end though, and I will be looking forward to the next one.

This book is about lost children being called by Doors to be found, and through literary magic, it’s like I, too, as the reader, walked through the Doors with Antsy and got lost in the Shop. As an adult who deeply relates to Antsy, it felt like I healed with her as the story moved forward. Many pages passed where I forgot the point of the book, just waiting for the next Door to open. Time flew by as I finished the book in one sitting—very fitting for the novel. In a moment of comic relief, I ended the book and said, “well, it’s a good thing I have therapy tomorrow morning!”

"Someone loves you. Someone has been taking care of you. And then something bad happened. Something bad enough that you looked at all that love and all that care and decided that they weren’t enough to balance out the size of the bad thing."

Lost in the Moment and Found follows a new character called Antsy! It's a darker story, as Antsy is in a bad situation at home. Her stepfather is acting inappropriately toward her and manipulating things to turn her mother against her. The story stops before anything can happen, but the first half of the story has an oppressive and ominous feeling.
It's clear that her stepfather intended to sexually assault her and it would have happened if Antsy hadn't fled.
Antsy doesn't have any power or an adult who would believe her, so she escapes before it's too late!

Antsy's desperate escape leads her to the Shop Where the Lost Things Go, a nexus that contains many doors to different worlds. It's her new home and she is able to visit many new places, which I found interesting to see. However, there is a catch and the longer Antsy stays, the more she feels like there is something the others haven't told her. I liked the discussions about agency and making an informed choice, as that's something that was taken away from her!

“They needed to know because a choice you make without knowing the consequences isn't any choice at all!”
