I was very excited about this because I love Egyptology. It irritated more than entertained. Half the story is split in the past and with Eve in 1972 after her most recent stroke trying to recover and remember. Huge triggering warning for stroke survivors and family members. That was rough. Tutankhamun wasn't even mentioned until chapter 6. When we finally get through everything, the book ends so abruptly I had to flip back to make sure I didn't miss some pages. Giving this a three because it wasn't terrible, but it certainly wasn't what I wanted to read and did not live up to the hype.

This is a light read, although I am uncertain why Paul chose a dual time-line structure. A straight chronological telling could have been more suspenseful. As it is, this book touches on multiple genres, but none of them are particularly enticing.

An ill-titled story as well. Eve certainly deserved attention and the title belittles her importance. The story really centers on her choices, not those of her father. The title jumps on the bandwagon of a trend, but it doesn't reflect the book.

Aside from that, I found this story a pleasant read and I did learn something about King Tut's tomb. I did like Eve.

This was a great book! Set in alternating time periods, from 1922 to 1970s, it tells the story of Eve, and her love for Egypt. Her father made many trips to Valley of the Kings, and was close friends with Howard Carter, who found King Tuts tomb. The author did her homework, as most events she described did actually take place. The story moved seamlessly between time periods, and really pulled me in. Eve and her husband were very much in love, though he was not the man her mother had chosen for her. She was very close to her father who encouraged her to be herself, and not follow the societal norms of her class. Thank you Netgalley for the advance copy. Definitely recommend!

Synopsis: The story focuses on Lady Evelyn Herbert and has two timelines running simultaneously. One of Eve in her seventies recovering from a stroke and one of Eve in the early 1920’s both in Egypt and England. Eve is trying to piece together her memory and find the answers to many questions that all lead back to the opening of King Tutankhamun’s tomb. Is the curse of the pharaoh’s real? Who are friends and who is out for information? Who is Dr. Ana Mansor?
My Thoughts:
The focus on a historical fiction outside of WWII was really unique and I it got me out of my box quite a bit. Eve is a lovely character to get to know and her sweet relationship with her husband really makes the book in my opinion. The flashes between time can be a bit confusing but overall really left me hanging until the very last moment. I honestly, did not see the ending coming at all! Will definitely be reading more Gill Paul in the future!
