Fantastic. A strong debut novel that tackles generations of enslavement and colonization. There are many gripping and darkly disturbing passages covering historical events typically removed from history books. There is weight to these stories and much of that comes from reading the cumulative effect of each new generation’s pain - unique in detail, but similar in depth. While highly ambitious, I found Gyasi needed to stretch some plot lines of characters to fit in the structure she created.

Story of two half sisters living in Africa during start of slavery. One was taken to America, the other stayed in Africa. Each chapter is the story of one of their descendants; stories of suffering, pain, and loss. Beautifully written and enthralling.

sadness prevails. I did like the way Gyasi brought it all together in the end.

I am most definitely in the minority here. My major issue with this book, is that although the chapters are somehow intertwined, it's ultimately told as a compilation of short stories. I find it really difficult to get into and enjoy short stories, as I often time feel authors jam too much information into a tiny section. As a whole, the book itself was great, but how the story was told just didn't work for me.

This is one of the best stories I’ve ever read. It was heartbreaking and heartwarming at every turn & I really enjoyed the way the chapters went along, person by person. It’s one of those novels I feel like everyone should read!
