It was moving so so so slow. It was dark, which is fine, but there’s a lot of darkness currently happening in the real world around me (LA fires, Trump presidency) and it was not the escapism I needed. The writing was fine, but going back to it felt like a work-out regime instead of something I was looking forward to.

One of the darkest, but simultaneously beautiful books I’ve read in a long time. It took me a little bit to get into it, especially the pirate childhood, but that is essential for the development of the rest of the novel. This is one of those books where the main character often drove me crazy with his bad decisions. That said, I fully believe those were necessary and true to the main character’s essence. Literally every bad thing happens in this book — illness, murder, kidnapping — which can be exhausting but the common theme is the love and devotion that connects the characters. Everything always comes full circle and every loose end is tied beautifully. I’m overall incredibly satisfied with the book.

A good and well written story but about 1/3 too long. Overall though it was just sad and hard to get into because it just kept pulling you down. I don’t regret reading it but I didn’t necessarily enjoy reading it either.

took halfway to get fully engaged into it. slow burn. short chapters made it easier to read. much more poetic writing than world building which was challenging. the love made me feel emotional 🥺. ngl didn’t totally know what was going on the entire time as i was impatiently skimming at times but it became clearer as it went on

highly disappointing. Much preferred We Begin at the End by same author.
this dragged on, was redundant in spots and took forever to resolve. LOTS of editing errors and even geographical ones (palmetto trees do NOt grow in mountains!! they're a seaside tree hahah).
