This book is the shift in the series (that Goblet of Fire has) where it starts to turn a little darker for Percy. The stakes are raised. Some characters die--and we haven't seen that yet. The separation of Annabeth from the group allows for Percy to be fleshed out as a character by himself, but also allows his to see the effect of her absence on him (can you tell I adore Percabeth?). Guys, he *knew* she was alive that whole time. He just knew. Weirdly enough, I love how Percy fails. It's a necessary part of the hero's journey, and I think it was very needed in this installment. He hasn't actually killed Luke but he did let Nico down when Bianca dies. It's impossible to always win and shows the truth in what Athena says about his fatal flaw.

[3.5 stars] definitely kinda feels like a filler book that you have to get through, probably because of the lack of percabeth being together but i still had fun
