Classic story of man’s arrogance leading to doom from lack of humanity. Created a genre and is still relevant today.

One of my all-time favorite novels and my first exposure to the frame narrative. Extremely tragic and much more harrowing than I was anticipating when I read this as a high school sophomore. After finishing, my favorite type of villainous character became one who was done unbelievably dirty by the protag. Kudos to 19-year-old Mary Shelley for cranking this one out.

Victor Frankenstein is someone I would not like to spend time with. I didn’t like him at all. The monster has a way better personality.

The book can feel very slow sometimes, like listening to someone recount their dream to you (not in a good way!).

The parts from the point of view of the monster are the most fun. Having seen the movie Poor Things, I was pleasantly surprised to see the similarities between Bella’s dialogue and the way the monster speaks/reasons. I knew the movie was inspired by the book, but reading it gave me a deeper appreciation for Poor Things (I didn’t like that movie much either, for the record, but still).

Now that I’ve read this book, I can better appreciate its iterations in pop culture- it was a quick enough read, but won’t ever re-read.
