A Wilderness of Stars had a one of the more unique plots I’ve seen/read in a while. Definitely worth the read. It does get slow in some areas where the plot seems to drag but the last 60 pages definitely make up for the slight slowness. It does have an open ending so if you’re not a fan of those beware but I love those because I can imagine what could happen should the author ever decide to pick it up again or write a companion story. Overall a really good and quick read. It will have you on the edge the entire time.

Oh my god...Shea Ernshaw...

After Winterwood and The Wicked Deep, she is basically an auto-buy author. But in all honesty, this book was as mid as its average rating.

The setting was GREAT. Futuristic sci-fi while giving feels of dystopian Wild West, the world she created had SO MUCH POTENTIAL. Unfortunately, it wasn't executed as well and there were many parts of the world left unexplained/revealed too hurriedly.

Next up: characters. Vega was cool. She was strong and determined, but also had a gritty edge of practicality to her that I REALLY enjoy in main characters. However, I think her personality became less interesting after she met Noah.

Speaking of which, let's talk about the romance. Why are Vega and Noah in love with each other? Quite frankly, after reading this entire book, I still can't tell. There wasn't much chemistry aside from physical attractiveness, him occasionally staring at her, and their similar fates as "chosen one"s. At the end of the book, I still do not know what makes Vega hesitate between choosing humanity and Noah (okay, I'm not as cold-hearted as I sound, I sort of do understand, but still, I'm trying to illustrate the point that the romance was shaky).

And given the fact that the romance made up 80% of the book, its shakiness was detrimental to the story.

Lastly, let me pop some questions:
Spoiler
1. How did the first Architect find the way to the ship? And if he did, why didn't he just come back to tell the first Astronomer and pass the information to 1 offspring only so 1 person could be the sole keeper of the keys to the universe, simplifying the journey (and saving time immensely) when the twin stars appear?
2. How does the ring/compass work? Does it always point toward the ship? We barely ever see Noah use it and we never fully got an explanation.
3. I saw someone else ask this, and I agree. Why does Vega have these tattoos on her back? We never see her use it, and she memorized the constellations already. If it were a symbol of her being an Astronomer, why not have it be something easily concealable, like the ring that the Architect wears? This would make more logical sense in protecting the Astronomer.
4. Why is there also an Astronomer and Architect on the other planet? What makes them develop the exact same titles and exact same roles, given that there was likely no way of communication between the two planets?

Those are all the questions I have so far, and I'm honestly quite disappointed at this book. So much lost potential in the worldbuilding. Alas, Shea Ernshaw does have a way with language, and there were a few heartbreaking scenes (and the setting was just generally cool). 3 stars it is.

Started off so good. Beautiful writing. The story lost its way in the middle. Extremely repetitive and boring. Relationship felt forced. I liked the ending, didn't see it coming. But I felt relieved upon finishing this book, which isn't a good sign.
