The Railway Children

E. Nesbit

3.87 AVERAGE

“Then, when the train passed the fence where the three children were, newspapers and hands and handkerchiefs were waved madly, till all that side of the train was fluttery with white. [....] To the children it almost seemed as though the train itself was alive, and was at last responding to the love that they had given it so freely and so long.”

A few months back I found this book at a preloved bookshop in a fair. I read a first few lines, then closed it and turned the book amd read the summary...then and there I knew it ..I must read it but somehow I didn't buy the book then. Last month I again visited the same shop at another fair and found this book again..this time I grabbed it..

From the very start it has aura of telling a story like we used to read in childhood "once upon a time there was..."

It starts with a happy family mother father and three children..but suddenly something happened and father has to go with strangers and the family had to relocate to a place they never thought they would call their home.

On the very first night they had to suffer with light and proper food and end up having the packed food brought from home. The children were not so pleased. But all these was a misunderstanding though.

Mother started getting busy with writing and the children were on their own exploring the neighborhood , befriending station master , railway staff , the old man on train..

In their time in Three Chimneys they made lots of friends, had so many adventures ultimately ending up with a happy note and family.

Through this story we can see struggle to fit in somewhere the children haven't think of, being mature and understanding to support their mother and each other in tough situation, helping others in difficult situations and many more.
All together it is a compact story to read this holiday season...not in a single chapter made me think of putting it down and not continue..it has it's own pace with easy writing and understanding..loved this one so much that it is now going to my comfort reads list.

Definitely good, but suffers from heightened expectations. As a children's classic, the expectation was of being overwhelmed, and I was not.

Such a cute book! I wish I would have read/ known about this as a child.

Such a sweet story

2.5

This was a smart book; I like that at this stage of the game people have children the benefit of the doubt in that way. Children can handle intelligent, amusing tales of heartbreak and joy, of family and love.

A jolly good romp in the English countryside where things will always work out if you try hard and always try to do the right thing.

A hopeful dream but still a lovely book
