I've been surprised, in some ways, how much we (as a family) have enjoyed Nesbit's writing so far (also read her Five Children and It series). Because of being originally written as serialized stories, sometimes the chapters can feel a little loosely connected, but my boys have always seemed to stay completely and engaged. They have particularly enjoyed her sense of humor often, and they were very invested in the characters of the children in this book as we read it together

Why do the adults cry so much? Why do the adults trauma dump on the children so much? What the heck.

The ending never fails to make me cry.

Considered a children's classic, I had never read this book. So of course even though I am no longer what you will consider a kid, I decided to read this on a whim. And it was cute little story, predictable but then again it is a kids book. If you, like me, have never read this before, it's not a bad choice for some quick light read that leaves you feeling good.
