"Don't you think it's rather nice to think that we're in a book that God's writing? If I were writing the book, I might make mistakes. But God knows how to make the story end just right—in the way that's best for us."

I found this to be such an enjoyable classic! I absolutely loved it.

I believe I watched the movie a few years ago but I forgot for the most part what happened. Since I wasn't a big reader when I was a kid I feel like I missed out on some great experiences (aka books). Sure you can always read a book like this when you are older but it won't have the same magic as if you read it when you are 7.

That being said I read this book trying to put myself in the mindset of my younger self. I don't think I was completely successful. It seems like a good deal of readers grew up loving this book but I believe my younger self would not have had the patience to keep reading it. Even now the story didn't grab my attention.

It was a sweet book and the kids (Bobbie, Phyllis, and Peter) are quirky and kind. Their adventures are realistic enough that I wasn't bothered by it and could just enjoy their heroics. One thing I liked was the relationship the kids had with each other. How they gave each other a hard time about certain stuff. I feel like siblings and best friends are the only ones really willing tell you that you are being annoying, unbearable, cocky, harsh, etc. They tell it like they see it.

However, at times I thought the kids were just too well behaved for their mother, and the mother was just unrealistically patient. It was just too perfect of an ending and if you know me you know a like happy clean endings but this one didn't suit me. Maybe because I didn't feel the struggle -the adversity- the characters had to go through. Sure it was stated, I just didn't feel it. This I know is completely subjective, but nevertheless it did dampen my enjoyment of the book just a little.

It didn't really catch my attention.

Like a nice warm blanket on a cold day. The kids are cute, the situations are funny and basically the whole thing is one long Ghibli movie in novel form. What else could you want for a comfort read?
