Simply charming, a must read for any lover of children's classics!

Khởi động đầu năm một cuốn truyện nhẹ nhàng. Truyện theo kiểu giáo dục trẻ em, thấy ko được tự nhiên lắm.

I felt like the ending was a bit rushed and anticlimactic but an overall good book. The language of the narrator was too overtly "childish" but i respect that.

Three siblings embark on a new adventure when they move to a country cottage near the railway. They quickly make friends with the railway employees, and memorize the train schedule. They run to the train track to wave hello to each train that passes, and the commuters begin to watch for them waving their little handkerchiefs every morning. But the railway is also a dangerous place to play. The children must learn the safety rules and signals. However, sometimes they find that they will need to break the rules to save the trains from certain disaster.

I love the old-fashioned charm of this book! It's such a beautiful story and all the characters are so sweet. Of course, they have days when they are grumpy and they make mistakes too, but they always make it right in the end. I love the way the siblings bicker and fight sometimes, but they also really support and care for each other.

There are a lot of layers to this story. The children have a certain innocent way of looking at the world, but there are hints from the grown-up world around them that all is not as it seems. There is a layer of mystery to what is happening when the grown-ups whisper together about things the children can't understand.

I am always enchanted with this book!

I really did not enjoy this book at all. I read it to my 6-year-old. She liked it, so it wasn't a total loss, but I really came to dread reading it every other night. I had to edit this book quite a bit as I read it, for several reasons. 1. Written over a hundred years ago, some of the language and themes were obscure. 2. Some of the themes were a little too serious for my 6-year-old. For instance, when the train was in danger of hitting the landslide, every time they said everyone on the train would be killed, I used "hurt" instead of "killed". I also skipped over a very politically incorrect conversation about Russians. 3. The Three Chimneys children and their mother spoke very well, but some of the train station people and townspeople spoke so horribly that I could barely make out what they were trying to say. I surely couldn't read it aloud the way it was written, so there was a lot of on-the-fly editing going on there. It was not an enjoyable read for me. I got several other E. Nesbit free on Kindle, but I won't be reading any of them anytime soon.

“Don't you think it's rather nice to think that we're in a book that God's writing? If I were writing the book, I might make mistakes. But God knows how to make the story end just right—in the way that's best for us.”

Are you in a bad mood? Want to cheer yourself up? Or do you just want to read a book that will make you feel happy?

“Also she had the power of silent sympathy. That sounds rather dull, I know, but it's not so dull as it sounds. It just means that a person is able to know that you are unhappy, and to love you extra on that account, without bothering you by telling you all the time how sorry she is for you.”

In fact, while I am writing this review, around 15 days after reading the book, I can't remember much of what exactly happened. But what I do remember the feeling while reading, and after reading [b:The Railway Children|164531|The Railway Children|E. This book brought me a lot of joy. It made me feel oddly nostalgic, and I know for a fact this book is going to become a comfort read for me.

“Our darling Roberta,
No sorrow shall hurt her
If we can prevent it
Her whole life long.
Her birthday's our fete day,
We'll make it our great day,
And give her our presents
And sing her our song.
May pleasures attend her
And may the Fates send her
The happiest journey
Along her life's way.
With skies bright above her
And dear ones to love her!
Dear Bob! Many happy
Returns of the day!”
