Totally unexpected ending. This was my first Peter May book and I'm glad he writes series -- can't wait to get to the next instalment of the Lewis Trilogy.

I was expecting a police procedural/mystery which I got. I mostly enjoyed the background color of the island and its people. The detail was thorough and well written. It could have used a firm editing as it seemed like it dragged in too many places. That and the fact that it felt like it veered into soap opera territory, particularly towards the end, cost it a star. Not a bad read, but not an enthusiastic recommend either.
A mystery within a mystery! The stories unfold slowly, intertwined together until the end when they are solved. I enjoyed the story tremendously and will be reading more in this series!

This book completely surprised me, and for this reader, that was both a good and bad thing. I was not at all expecting the majority of the book to be a flashback to Macleod’s childhood instead of focusing just on the mystery. What additionally surprised me was how much I enjoyed these chapters. I adored getting to feel like I also grew up on the Isle of Lewis, and this book is the definition of “strong sense of place.” I have a few gripes with the characters and their storylines, but overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this literary mystery that takes you into the rough life of the Outer Hebrides.
