The Blackhouse

This was often a painful read. It first seemed like it would be good which is why I had kept going but then I found the background of main character dull and the mystery slowly went nowhere till it became very obvious who the suspect is. I am not sure if the author was going more for a literary feel but it didn't work as that either. I've been avoiding young adult fiction and half of this was that and the other half was an extremely slow paced uninteresting mystery. Too much time setting up the background, describing setting and irrelevant characters. Maybe I just read this at the wrong time but there are other mystery authors that I like better so I doubt I'll come back to this.

Unremittingly bleak, but strong throughout. What it isn't, is a gripping crime novel. What it is, is an outstanding tragedy in which the crime is really secondary to the characters. There are things that I disliked about May's writing that later made more sense, so if you feel the characters are somewhat flat or unbelievable, stick with it because it becomes clearer later. Very good, but not an experience I would want to repeat any time soon.

A really good, atmospheric novel. The descriptions of the remote Scottish island really bring it to life. As I was reading, I kept thinking, why is Fin and Artair's past so heavily featured. That is, until you realize, the past is an integral part of the story. I will definately read the other two books in the series.

I really enjoyed this mystery and I am happy to see that it is the first of a trilogy. I loved the evocative descriptions of the windswept island landscapes (the setting is Lewis Island, part of the Outer Hebrides, off Scotland), the descriptions of the people and their stories. The protagonist, Fin Macleod is a troubled detective in a failing marriage and who has recently lost his only son. He left the island 18 years before, but is now sent back to investigate the murder of a local man. In the book, Fin’s past unravels through the memories of his childhood and youth and eventually he will confront the ghosts of his past. The ending was a bit predictable, but overall a splendid read, I’m looking forward to reading the next book.

Only got interesting at the very end of the book. The end section was really good and explained alot which is why I gave it 3 stars rather than the 1 star that I was going to give it.
