Was finding this a slog to get through unfortunately, will come back to it in a few years when I'm more patient.

I read it as two different things: the fall of a woman through passion (titular anna karenina) and the internal musings of a man in reason (arguably the real main character levin)

I could’ve finished this book faster if I had dedicated my entire time with it. Instead, I only read a couple chapters a day and even had month long breaks in-between parts. Doing so made reading this book take almost an entire year, but it was worth it.

I wouldn’t have loved these people so much if I had rushed through their entire lives. Yes, I read lives, not stories. Love and death felt all the more real with these people. I felt every single thing they felt as if I was there with them, that I inhabited their souls. Tolstoy made sure of that by taking a stroll through their individual thoughts frequently. An action done by someone is almost always paired with an even longer internal monologue about why they did that and what part of their life made them do that in the first place. It’s a lot to think about but reading through it felt like second-nature.

That is, in my opinion, one of this book’s greatest strength. Yes the themes, the critiques, the messages of this book is equally important, but I value how this book took me to an entirely different world. I felt real grief reading “The End” on the last page. I spent so much time with these people and this is the end for me (not really since I’ll probably reread this in the future).

(fuck you vronsky)

(fuck me stepan oblonsky)

(i love you levin (and anna))
