I rather liked this, but I think I would have liked it even more, had I not read only about 20-30 pages at a time in my lunchbreak.
All the characters are great, the plot is intricate and I love that it's placed in the pre-WWII era.

Picked this up randomly last year - really loved this intersection of fantasy, heist, and historical fiction. The stakes are a bit too high to put it into "cozy fantasy" - racialized and queerphobic violence by villain characters really does make you nervous that the MCs will make it through this book OK. Definite recommend if you like Sarah Waters, but maybe want more fantasy/magic elements.

This was a funny one. In some ways, I absolutely loved this 1920s story of a mysterious woman who comes to Seattle to be companion to a high society girl who parties hard and has the addiction to show, a story with magic and shapeshifters and speakeasies and so much more. But on the other hand, the blurb on the cover called this "a fierce magical heist tale" and it felt like it took more than half the book before anything around a heist was even considered, and only in the last 25 or so pages when the action really took off. And at that point I was kind of confused what was going on, which is a strange feeling for such a short book (187 pages). Also, something happened to Dolly, in the fae realm, but if it was actually ever described or explained, I missed it. Honestly there were points I googled just to confirm that this wasn't like, the third book in a series. A series I would TOTALLY read by the way!

If you want a fun, magical, novella and the setting of 1920s Seattle interests you? I'd say go for it. If plot holes bother you? Maybe skip this one.

I've been keen to read this one for ages. The title is cool and so is the cover and I was hopeful this was going to be a little gem.

Unfortunately it wasn't everything I wanted and I found the story quite confusing.

When the cover quote claims it's a "fierce magical heist tale" I immediately expect Oceans 11-style cleverness but make it magic! So it's disappointing when it doesn't live up to expectation...

By the end this got a little scattershot, but I really loved it until then.
