Another cute book, but it again repeats the Thanksgiving myth as if it is fact.

This is a racist book I came across while decolonizing a library collection. I am posting this review so that educators can avoid using this book and/or delete it from their collections. This book completely failed the Smithsonian's "Worksheet for Selecting Native American Children's Literature", a practice recommended by American Indians in Children's Literature.

This story is about mice putting on a play that explains how Thanksgiving came to be. It is an extremely easy, quick read. This book is perfect for early childhood or lower elementary aged students.

This is more my reaction than the kids' reactions, but this doesn't give an accurate representation of Thanksgiving. Let's all be very honest here: Thanksgiving was not a happy meeting of the Puritans and the Indians, coming together with a big dinner to celebrate their lovely friendship. It just wasn't. A quick Google search will reveal a systematic dismantling of our myths and legends. Look to Natives for your truth, and historians who aren't afraid to call BS on the whole thing.

If you bring this book into your classroom, you're going to be promoting that same story in an effort to explain why we celebrate this holiday to the wee ones. Maybe it's time we sat down and said, "You know what, we celebrate this day so we can have a big meal with family. Those pictures of Indians and Puritans? They're not real. They're just stories we like to tell." When they get older, you can fully explain to them what the history is. For now, though, in a classroom setting, I would introduce more books that focus on family, thankfulness, and togetherness rather than distorted history.

My opinion aside, the kids thought the pictures were cute and entertaining, but I can't say they were enthralled.

I was looking for a short read aloud for preschool for thanksgiving, and found this. It needed a lot of backstory.

A cute beginning story about Mice putting on a play about the pilgrims. It is told in rhyme and of course the play has inaccuracies. The mice are cute and the sets are cute and this brings out the theatre geek in me. The pictures are warm with warm colors and cute mice. It’s a great introduction to the excitement of the theatre.

The nephew gave this 4 stars while the niece wouldn’t read it. Middle of the road book.

The premise and pictures are cute, but it's a bit awkward to read. Some of it rhymes, some doesn't, it just doesn't really flow.
