If I could press one book into everyone's hand, it would be this. It has unparalleled wisdom for the lost, the hurting, and the brokenhearted. This masterfully curated collection of devotionals and writing has had a profound impact on multiple family members and friends. It was also a companion to my dad in the hospital in his last days, leading us to select a poem to read at his celebration of life service. It's been three years since then, and it still feels like this book has more to teach me my fourth way through.
This book has many reviews with 5 stars in Goodreads. I'm picking it up, however, because it's one of my "100 Christian Books that Changed the Century", not because I'm looking for a daily devotional.
I started off thinking I might use this as a daily devotional and see if it's something I can personally work with, but it's not. I read November 14th, and then flicked through some earlier ones. Then this morning I read November 15th and likewise flicked through some other dates. They are all words of comfort, which I'm sure are wonderful for a good many people, but I'm not in need of comfort. That's not to say that life doesn't still throw me some curlers, and I'd be the last to say that life is wonderful all the time, and I become deeply distressed when I see/hear about/read of atrocities in this world, but I guess I've found the way to survive in it. Acceptance and Compassion.

One of my very favorite devotionals that I decided to re-read once again this year. I'm always encouraged and drawn closer to the Lord through the daily readings which are compiled from various authors writings that expand on the daily scripture. This version has updated language and uses the NIV, but I love the original version as well.
Not my favorite devotional. Occasionally I really enjoyed it, and other times, it felt like it was a devotional that suffered from ADD. Too many authors quoted within a single day's entry.
