Okay okay, I'm hooked.
First off, this book is VIBES. It's dark and grubby. It's marinated in blood and bile. The illustrations in my copy had me dreaming of an animated series.
It started slow and bitty and a bit all over the place. The backwards and forwards takes a moment to settle in, the language mashup (the french, the old English) was a bit annoying and distracting. The inventive name-calling was kind of juvenile and not in a good way.
But. I started to become fond of ol' Gabe. I mean, I learnt pretty quick to not get attached to anything but still the miserable bastard got under my skin.
Once the plot settles, and you fall into the flow, I ate this up. I think it definitely improves as it goes along and I rinsed the last third at breakneck speed. I enjoyed the themes a lot, loss, longing, moral wrangling. The iconography of this thing is delightful, it's beautifully described and tangible.
Get me on to book two!

Read this if you have religious trauma, are bitter, love vampires, love Geralt / Witcher vibes, and don't mind getting your heart bruised.
There is so much I love about this book. Illustrations were beautiful and abundant (THANK YOU FOR THIS), suspense absolutely killed me, and the writing was extremely poetic, I have more quotes written in my notes app from this book than I think any other!
The writing did get too corny sometimes, even for me, and I kept going in between loving and hating the fact it was told the way it was. Realistically, person or mythical being, there's no way one would tell their story to their enemy in such vulnerable detail, including describing laying with their wife But it's hard because it also made it so cinematic and entertaining?
If this doesn't become adapted to screen then I'll throw a tantrum (even though I'd have to skip sooo many parts bc BRUTAL).
I mourn the fact I'm done with this book. Oops, onto the next!
