Born in China in 1461, during the Ming dynasty, during a time educated women were unheard of, Tan Yunxian grows up learning the field of medicine from her paternal grandparents. She also finds the friendship of a lifetime in a midwife’s daughter, Meiling. When Yunxian is married at the age of fifteen, she is expected to conform to the strict rules of being a wife, but she’s not about to give up.
When I started writing this review, I technically hadn’t finished reading yet, but I already knew what rating I would give.
It goes without saying that society in fifteenth century China was much different from the way it is today. I enjoyed reading about the many customs of the time period, which were heavily researched, so I have to give Lisa See props for that. Sometimes the narrative could get too heavy and tedious, and some subjects were difficult to read about, but overall, this book really piqued my interest.
I adore Yunxian, who was a real person. Her passion for medicine, her devotion to those she holds dear, and her desire for justice all come together to make a strong leading lady. She was ahead of her time in that regard.
TW: graphic descriptions of illness, injury, childbirth, and miscarriage
