Full disclosure: I always enjoy Lisa See’s books. This book is no exception. I appreciate all of her research and the ability to turn what could be dull and dry into a page turning story with characters that I think about for years after reading their story.

this book was so rich in both setting and its study of the main character. i really appreciate how we got to watch tan yunxian grow up and take on different roles in society as she aged. the pacing was a bit slow at time, but yunxian’s friendship with meiling, arguably the core of the story, really pulled at my heartstrings and kept me invested.

I absolutely ate this book up! It was so good. This was my first Chinese historical fiction and my first book by Lisa See, it will not be my last. I learned so much about Chinese historical culture, while at the same time enjoying a fantastic story. Truly a work of art
