Really solid and well-researched historical fiction, the story felt rich and illustrative. It was slow, but it felt like it should be, so I had no issues with the pacing. The characters and their interactions felt so realistic and tangible. Overall a super immersive and wonderful read.

Once I started reading this book, I couldn’t put it down. It’s one of the few novels I’ve managed to finish in just two days this year, which says a lot. The plot is engaging from beginning to end - there’s never a dull moment or unnecessary filler. Lady Tan is such a well-developed character; you really get to see her evolve throughout the story, with both her strengths and flaws portrayed in a very realistic way. The writing is also incredibly vivid - the descriptions made it so easy to picture the scenes and feel completely transported to another time. A truly captivating and memorable read.
I did not expect to like this one, as much as I did. It covers the first female doctor in China's history, or a recorded record, and the acknowledgments include a wealth of information, articles, references, and resources that the author used when writing.
