“Women who help other women help themselves.” So much of this story is sad, just the reality of how women have been dismissed and mistreated throughout the ages. It also shows the truth of “no mud, no lotus” and the strength within women throughout the ages. I love this writer and this story about a woman doctor in the 1500s, China.

All of Lisa See’s books are incredible in their own way! This book was quite different than the others I have read and focused on a woman with great privilege. I appreciated how even when writing about a woman of high standing, See highlighted the difficulties she faced just by being a woman. It was really interesting to learn more about Chinese medicine, foot binding practices, and culture at this point in China’s history.

See is top notch at honoring history and culture, bringing to life the language, behaviors, and sentiment of a time long past. The reader comes to feel the life of Lady Tan, through her travails and triumphs. Very enjoyable read.

This book’s theme seemed to be the inability of Chinese men to see the women in their lives as equal partners/loved ones. The women in turn competed with one another for status at the expense of other women’s happiness, reputations, and careers.
