2.5 stars. I completely understand why this is popular. It’s historical fiction with an underlying feminist story. The story centres around the women from start to finish and romance is not a major plot line. The scenes about foot binding were really gory for me and difficult to read. But overall seemed fairly historically accurate and an interesting dip into ancient China.

Truthfully I wanted to like this book so much more. I was attracted to it because it’s historical fiction, involved a lot of research, and got really good reviews but it just didn’t hold my interest that much.
The research and context and overall content of the plot was very very interesting and I can appreciate how difficult it must have been to provide so much history about this period of time in China and how women and doctors experienced it. For some reason I just really struggled to finish reading it and didn’t find myself intrigued by the characters
