There’s elements there of what makes Middlemarch so compelling, but the overarching misogyny and religiosity make it a less interesting read for modern people. Also Arthur Donnithorne when I fucking Get you it’s all over. The book lost a lot of steam once Hetty was no longer in it.
Great writing, had a happier ending than I expected it to given the reviews.
I struggled reading this as I'm not very good at reading speech that has been written in dialect. I found the book hard to get in to. From about half way through I found that I was looking forward to finding out what happened to the characters. Did struggle again near the end with the harvest festival scene which seemed totally irrelevant to the story.
When I started the book I didn't think I would finish it so I'm pleased I persevered.

Definitely not my favorite George Eliot. It's overly didactic, and characters who we're supposed to like--such as Mrs. Poyser--are pretty awful. I do like the characters of Hetty and Dinah, though, and there are some moving scenes involving them.
Possibly 3.5.
I found the premise and some aspects of the book fascinating, and the second half very gripping - but as I often find with George Eliot, I found it more interesting than enjoyable, and the pacing, especially at the ending, wasn't quite right for me. Nonetheless, I'm looking forward to reading more George Eliot in future.

I took a course in college that focused exclusively on Jane Austen (with whom I was already smitten) and George Eliot (who I had never heard of). Adam Bede was the first of her books I was assigned for the class. At first I hated it simply for taking me away from Austen, but as I read this and several other of Eliot's books,I realized I had been missing another startlingly talented writer. I hope to go back and read them again at some point.
