I just can't with this book. More collected thoughts possibly to come. The book is nearly unreadable in its writing style (sort of a stream of consciousness "teenager" speak). I also can't get that worked up about a month long relationship with a complete and utter douchebag ending.

A great story of that ridiculous, all-consuming high school love that is infinitely more heartbreaking to read as a grown up who wishes she could SHAKE THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS out of these high schoolers and by proxy, her high school self.

The book was okay, but sadly, I really can't put myself on any of the characters. Though I really liked the twist at the ending.

Finally, I've been able to sit down and write a review about this book. Actually, I'm on break at work and figured this would be the best and only time I'd actually get to write it.

So, there's this girl. Min. First of all, I just loved her name and I knew I would love her character as soon as I read the first page. The book is about Minerva writing a letter to her ex-boyfriend about why they broke up and is giving him back all his things that she kept.

If you're not familiar with this book at all, then you're probably not familiar with the fact that there are PICTURES in this book. Holy crap, did this excite me. The pictures are fantastic and I loved that.

As you read the book, you realize how simple Min really is and how Ed, her ex-boyfriend, is just not really her type. Throughout the book, she tells stories of their past and through most of the book you want them to stay together. Unfortunatley, you know that because of the title of this book, they won't.

After reading this book, I decided that I wanted to write a letter to my ex-boyfriend of two years about why we broke up. I felt better. I won't give it to him but I enjoyed writing like Min did throughout the book.

The only downfall about this is that it's kind of a cliche storyline. Min, nerd. Ed, basketball player. Dating. He does something bad. They break up.

It was just how the story was written and set up.

Just an amazing and beautiful book.

(Probably add more to this review in awhile. Break's over. :) )

To get the one negative thing out of the way: the plot felt a bit lacking. There should've been more to it.

BUT THE WRITING STYLE WAS SO GORGEOUS AND PRETTY AND WOW! If every book was written like this it would drive me insane, but because not every book is, it's really unique and great.

The artwork too was amazing, and such a great addition to the book. The artstyle even matched the writing style.

I

I listened to this book, and I really liked the addition of the sound effects. You could actually hear each item being dropped into the box. It's funny to think about the things we choose to keep (or have kept) over the course of a relationship. Although this is a YA book, I chuckled because I remembered the feeling of young love.

I loved the characters, the distinct voice, the plethora of commas, the gorgeous illustrations, but I'm still trying to internalize a few things about it. Without spoiling the plot, I'll just say that there were stereotypical characters that embodied their tropes and cliche plot points-- since the protagonist is obsessed with movies and stories, I've been racking my brain for what Handler was trying to do by putting her within a cliche plot. Yes, the protagonist is self-aware that her story is cliche, but I'm trying to decide whether it was enough. What is the purpose of allowing a character to embody a trope but not allowing them to stray from it? To me, it read as discouraging, like people can't change, like they're stuck making the decisions they're supposed to make. I know that since I'm wrestling with themes and ideas, that Handler was definitely trying to do something with it, but I'm still not sure what that is.
