At first I wasn't sure I'd be able to hang with this book because the dialogue and story-teller's style of speaking are really choppy. But I found myself liking this book because the love story ran together so smoothly and the stuff the characters did together throughout their romance was so cute. Also, I wasn't expecting the twist that was the nail in the coffin of their relationship and which also left me heartbroken and shook for the story teller. Plus the way the story was told through stories about various objects was cool too
People seem to either love or hate this book. I'm definitely one of the loves. Daniel Handler's writing sings on the page - his characters leap out at the reader through what they say and how they say it. We know from the start that the relationship between Min and Ed is doomed, but the story of how it plays out is so poignant and so beautiful that it holds the attention all the way to the end. Very very sad, very very funny and an exquisite look at two very different teen cultures that can never meet.

I still can't decide what to think of this book, because i still can't quite figure out why i liked it so much
part of it was the writing. It was almost run-on, but not since it was just so blunt like the way some one speaks to you. Maybe that's what it is, it wasn't overly formal, it was just someone ranting every hurt and love they had for someone that meant so much to them before that person broke their heart.
But it wasn't just a rant. That was only a part of it. It was a story expressed of two very different people learning to accept differences and then love each other for it.
I love how there was a box too. Just a random aspect to this story that just tied it together because of how each object in that box was incorporated and through each object, a story unfolded that could portray so much of what it means to be a teenager.
It was one fantastic random story, so full of a unique character and perspective that you can't help but be drawn into it .

I really liked this book. I think I just really like Daniel Handler (but not really Lemony Snicket). The story is really silly - it's a teen romance - which is why it loses half a star (only half, but you can't see that on goodreads), but it's beautifully told and that's why I really like Daniel Handler.
Oh, Daniel Handler, I made a mistake in reading one of your books - I know that many people like your writing but ever since you decided we don't deserve to believe in Lemony Snicket I just don't trust you.
Oh, Maira Kalman, if not for your beautiful illustrations, I would never have picked up this book. And they were the best part of it but were they enough?

I really, really enjoyed this book. I thought it was a little predictable but super cute and I really, really loved the writing style. I really felt for and connected with Min and overall just thought it was a great story.
3.5 stars. Not kind what I was expecting (even though I'm not sure what I was). Strong language and content - advised for an older teen.
