The Last Suspicious Holdout is a collection of loosely connected short stories exploring the concerns of southern Black suburban families from 1992-2007. They were notable for the variety of topics explored - health, education, gentrification, the war on drugs, the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, - and the way they avoided predictable stereotypes. I thought the characterisation and storytelling was excellent and I definitely want to dig into the author’s backlist. I listened on audio and really enjoyed the narrator, Adenrele Ojo.
