Still thoroughly entertained, but...it felt like far more plot threads just kinda went nowhere, than in the last one.

3.5/5 Heitz ain't afraid to off characters, even ones you might feel have been through more than enough already.

I felt that this book was very similar to the first novel in the series. It had the same typical and predictable plot lines of an evil villain that Tungdil manages to kill in the end. I felt that the characters really have not received any development in the book, besides tungdil and even him it is minor. I felt that the author this has not made up his mind on where to grow and development Tungdil because he has eluded to the thirdling traits in him and then in other sections of the book completed disregards that trait. I would like the author to spend more time on the characters and world building so that the story is more flushed and easier to read. One part I did really enjoy was any part in the freeling's kingdom, i thought that the whole premise was very interesting and loved to see the world building in it. I did enjoy this book but it was just too similar to the first one. The author really needs to change things up with the third book. I will continue to read this series since dwarves are by far my favorite fantasy character.

There is nothing really bad about this book, but it's written in a simple, language friendly way catering to 10-15 year olds. It's not the big things, but a lot of little things that makes it rather boring and unsatisfying to a more mature reader.
I won't bother with a longer review, but the one word that comes to mind is "childish"; with that I'm referring to everything about the book - the plot, subplots, characters, villains, language use.

I wouldn't have finished this book if I didn't have some long night watches, but it was useful to help practicing my speed-reading. I can recommend it to anyone, but kids looking for a "first" book to read.

A 3½ star effort but I'm marking it up because it's so over the top. This is one roller-coaster ride that swings and lurches from war to disaster to awkward romance and derring-do and back again. I don't think the author really stopped and had a look what he wrote, as there's major inconsistencies and continuity issues throughout, but that's trumped by the audacity of the whole thing.

One flaw I do find in this novel (and the one before it) is that the characters' motivation is primarily one of revenge - good guy and bad guy alike. Alas, it doesn't get any deeper than that. Everyone is out to right some perceived wrong against them.

I use the term "great fun" in a lot of my reviews, and for good reason. While many of the books I review are devoid of intellectual worth or heft, they're a hoot of a read. This one is no different.
