quagmire triplets!!! VFD!!! 😖

this was my fav of the series so far! (i'm a sucker for a school setting, and this one was deliciously drab.) the Quagmire triplets were delightful and provided a nice balance to all the terrible things happening to the Baudelaires. this wasn't my favorite rendition of Count Olaf, but he was definitely still quite terrifying!

This book is one of my favorites for the single reason that it introduces some of my favorite characters in the series. The introduction of the Quagmires really makes this book interesting and it adds more intrigue to the rest of the series. This is a very nice threshold point in the series and for the reasons mentioned previously, I recommend reading said book.

I started my re-read of this entire series early this year, inspired by the Netflix adaptation. The first four were a terrible slog, only because the show is so faithful to the books. After powering through, this one really reignited my curiosity for this quirky series.

Snicket's writing is surprisingly funny, remarkably cryptic, and moves along at a brisk pace. There's no excess fat here, and it serves the story well, especially considering there's eight more books to follow.

While the first four books set the stage, this fifth installment breaks the ice to hint at a larger mystery. I only remember bits of it from my read-through as a younger me. I'm picking up on quips, riddles, and teachable moments that I likely glazed over in the past, and once again I'm hooked on Snicket's morose series.

wow didn’t think it would take me this long to get through such a tiny book

It feels like a filler episode, but it actually shows meaningful progress in the series' plot by the end. Still, it's the weakest episode overall.
